Deterministic/Stochastic Wavelet Decomposition for Recovery of Signal From Noisy Data

چکیده
In a series of recent papers on nonparametric regression, D. Donoho and I. Johnstone developed wavelet shrinkage methods for recovering unknown piecewise-smooth deterministic signals from noisy data. Wavelet shrinkage based on the Bayesian approach involves specifying a prior distribution on the wavelet coeecients, which is usually assumed to have a distribution with zero mean. There is no a priori reason why all prior means should be zero; indeed, one can imagine certain types of signals where this is not a good choice of model. In this paper, we take an empirical Bayes approach where we propose an estimator for the prior mean that is \plugged into" the Bayesian shrinkage formulas. Another way we are more general than previous work is that we assume the underlying signal is composed of a piecewise-smooth deterministic part plus a zero-mean stochastic part; that is, the signal may contain a reasonably large number of nonzero wavelet coeecients. Our goal is to predict this signal from noisy data. We also develop a new estimator for the noise variance based on a geostatistical method that considers the behavior of the variogram near the origin. Simulation studies show that our method (DecompShrink) outperforms the well known VisuShrink and SureShrink methods for recovering a wide variety of signals. Moreover, it is insensitive to the choice of the lowest-scale cut-oo parameter, which is typically not the case for other wavelet shrinkage methods.

Comparative Analysis of Wavelet-based Feature Extraction for Intramuscular EMG Signal Decomposition
Background: Electromyographic (EMG) signal decomposition is the process by which an EMG signal is decomposed into its constituent motor unit potential trains (MUPTs). A major step in EMG decomposition is feature extraction in which each detected motor unit potential (MUP) is represented by a feature vector. As with any other pattern recognition system, feature extraction has a significant impac...
متن کاملRemoval of muscle artifact from EEG data: comparison between stochastic (ICA and CCA) and deterministic (EMD and wavelet-based) approaches
Electroencephalographic (EEG) recordings are often contaminated with muscle artifacts. This disturbing myogenic activity not only strongly affects the visual analysis of EEG, but also most surely impairs the results of EEG signal processing tools such as source localization. This article focuses on the particular context of the contamination epileptic signals (interictal spikes) by muscle artif...
متن کاملFeature Selection in Structural Health Monitoring Big Data Using a Meta-Heuristic Optimization Algorithm
This paper focuses on the processing of structural health monitoring (SHM) big data. Extracted features of a structure are reduced using an optimization algorithm to find a minimal subset of salient features by removing noisy, irrelevant and redundant data. The PSO-Harmony algorithm is introduced for feature selection to enhance the capability of the proposed method for processing the measure...
متن کاملA Benders\' Decomposition Based Solution Method for Solving User Equilibrium Problem: Deterministic and Stochastic Cases
The traffic assignment problem is one of the most important problems for analyzing and optimizing the transportation network to find optimal flows. This study presented a new formulation based on a generalized Benders' decomposition approach to solve its important part, i.e. user equilibrium problems, in deterministic and stochastic cases. The new approach decomposed the problem into a master p...

Introduction: Brain visual evoked potential (VEP) signals are commonly known to be accompanied by high levels of background noise typically from the spontaneous background brain activity of electroencephalography (EEG) signals. Material and Methods: A model based on dyadic filter bank, discrete wavelet transform (DWT), and singular value decomposition (SVD) was developed to analyze the raw data...
